What Can Be Done Will Be Done (performance painting), ink, hibiscus on paper, SOMArts, San Francisco, CA, 2011

This piece was done for Third Strike: 100 Performances for the Hole. Kind audience volunteer assistance by (I think it was) Yoshi. With this piece I was exploring ideas of simultaneous presence, duration, and experience transmission.

It Only Seems Like Unending Torment (participatory durational performance intervention with a hint of institutional critique - 46 minutes of continuous slow dancing to Kenny G) YBCA Grand Lobby, San Francisco, CA, 2011
[not sure who took this photo - I swiped it from the interwebs - thank you]

111206 Honey McMoney It Only Seems Like Unending Torment 2 from Mark McBeth &#124; Projects on Vimeo.

This is the copy I wrote for the invite:
- A group performance art piece about duration, connection, and the experience of the universal through the quintessential.

action: YOU and a partner/friend/loved one/stranger WILL SLOW DANCE in a very basic rocking step continuously... FOR THE DURATION of the music.

The music will consist of 46 MINUTES of the work OF KENNY G.

This piece will be open to the public with the condition of engaging with and committing to the 46 minute score.
INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!

I so totally and completely want you to join me/us for this piece.

In the Grand Lobby of YBCA Tuesday 12/6 we will have a few minutes to gather and talk this through and then just go for it, settle in and see what happens.

Thanks,
Honey
And if you don't know me, look here:
www.honeymcmoney.com

Produced by THEOFFCENTER.
Thanks YBCA for use of your lobby!

Here's some more of my thoughts:

This piece very directly talks about the nature of durational performance art. It invites people to settle in to a repetitive movement meditation in connection with another human, while also engaging with the idea that, due to the immense popularity of Kenny G, performers will also be experiencing a remote aural connection with other humans around the globe. Participants will be encourage to consider their experience as an individual, as a couple, as a group, and as humans. Kenny G represents a quintessential idea of "the waiting room", the lobby, the elevator: his technique and aesthetic driven by a quality of endlessness, smoothness and quotidian pleasantness. It is at this point of endlessness that durational performance art and smooth jazz find their unlikely crossroads. Kenny G is, himself, a durational performer, holding a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for playing the longest note ever recorded on a saxophone. Using circular breathing, Kenny G held an E-flat for 45 minutes and 47 seconds at J&#38;R Music World in New York City.

Some additional facts that inform the content of this piece:

Kenny G's sixth studio album, Breathless, became the number one best selling instrumental album ever, with over 15 million copies sold, of which 12 million were in the U.S. He broke another record when his first holiday album, Miracles, sold over 13 million copies, making it the most successful Christmas album to date.

His music is noticeably popular in China. His recording "Going Home" is often played at closing time at public places or at the end of classes at schools. Mass transit systems in Tianjin and Shanghai play these songs when trains approach terminus stations.</description>
